Recent mapping efforts have clarified the current range and population density of the North American moose (Alces alces). The study shows that moose remain concentrated in northern boreal forests, with notable pockets in the Midwest and western United States, while populations in the southern Great Plains have declined sharply in the past two decades.

Overview of Moose Habitat

Moose favor cool, wet environments where mixed woodlands provide both browse and water. The species thrives in the coniferous forests of Canada, Alaska, and the northern United States, where long growing seasons support abundant understory growth. Habitat fragmentation, climate change, and increased human encroachment have limited suitable areas in the eastern and southern regions.

Geographic Distribution

Mapping indicates that the densest moose populations are found in the Canadian boreal belt, extending into Alaska and the northernmost U.S. states such as Maine, New Hampshire, and the Great Lakes region. In the western U.S., moose are primarily located in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Southern states like Texas and Oklahoma host only small, isolated herds, often restricted to protected wildlife refuges.

Population Trends

Data collected over the past 20 years reveal a steady decline of up to 30% in southern populations, while northern herds have remained relatively stable or grown modestly. Key drivers of these trends include increased predation pressure from wolves and grizzly bears, hunting pressures, and the impact of disease such as chronic wasting disease (CWD). In contrast, climate warming has opened new forage opportunities in some northern areas, partially offsetting habitat loss.

Implications for Conservation and Management

The uneven distribution underscores the need for region‑specific management strategies. In the south, habitat restoration and disease monitoring are priorities. Northern regions require ongoing surveillance of CWD spread, as well as protective measures to limit human disturbance in critical breeding and calving areas. Collaborative efforts between federal agencies, indigenous communities, and wildlife NGOs have been essential in developing adaptive management plans.

Future Monitoring Efforts

Future initiatives will leverage satellite telemetry and citizen‑science data collection to refine population estimates. Enhanced genetic testing will track disease prevalence and genetic diversity, informing long‑term conservation decisions. Continued funding and cross‑border cooperation will be pivotal to ensure the moose population remains resilient amid rapid environmental change.
