U.S. Map Gets a Fair Share: Every State Gets the Same Population (And Some Laughs)

In a bold visual experiment that could make a political map look like a toddler’s coloring book, a new U.S. map has been split so that every state contains exactly the same number of people. The result: a patchwork of oddly shaped, roughly equal‑population states that defy conventional borders but delight cartographers and pranksters alike.

The Birth of the Equal‑Population Map

Cartographer David M. P. Smith took a page out of the “fairness handbook” and decided that the U.S. should be divided into 50 regions of equal population, each housing 6.8 million residents. The map’s designers sacrificed the neatness of state lines to ensure that each slice carries the same demographic weight, resulting in shapes that look like a mixture of jellybeans and puzzle pieces. This quirky approach turns a serious topic—like apportionment—into a conversation about visual justice and artistic license.

How the Numbers Were Split

Using the latest U.S. Census data, the map’s algorithm calculated the population of each region by marching through the country in a serpentine pattern—think of a giant snake that slithers across the landscape. It then adjusted the borders to keep each section within a 2% margin of the target population. The outcome is a set of states that are not only equal in people but also in the humor of their irregular boundaries.

What It Means for Politics and Everyday Life

While the map is not intended for official use, it offers a tongue‑in‑cheek glimpse at the mechanics behind redistricting. If each state had an equal population, every voter would wield the same weight in elections, sidestepping the current “malapportionment” that favors less populated areas. On the practical side, the map could serve as a teaching tool for geography classes, a novelty print for coffee tables, or a meme template for those who love political satire.
