The United States is home to over 3.5 million Muslims, a figure that has grown more than 40 percent in the past decade. While the majority live in large metropolitan areas, the distribution varies dramatically by state, with significant pockets in the South, Midwest, and West. Understanding where Muslims reside is key for policymakers, community leaders, and businesses looking to serve a diverse population.

Nationwide Distribution

Recent surveys and census estimates illustrate a clear pattern of urban concentration, particularly in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston. These hubs host vibrant cultural centers, mosques, and businesses catering to Muslim families. Rural and suburban regions, though smaller in absolute numbers, are rapidly increasing as communities relocate for better economic prospects and social integration.

State‑Level Concentrations

South Carolina and Texas lead the nation in Muslim population density, followed by Georgia, Illinois, and Washington. These states host the largest numbers of mosques and Islamic schools, reflecting the community’s robust organizational structure. In contrast, states such as Wyoming, Vermont, and Maine have fewer than 10,000 Muslims, underscoring regional disparities that can impact resource allocation and political representation.

Historical Growth Patterns

Between 2010 and 2020, the Muslim population grew from 1.6 million to 3.5 million, driven by immigration from the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa, as well as natural increase. The 2020 census marked the first official count of Muslims in the U.S., providing a clearer picture of demographic shifts and helping to inform public policy.

Implications for Policy and Society

Accurate mapping of Muslim populations aids in allocating resources for education, healthcare, and emergency services, ensuring that communities receive tailored support. Politically, understanding demographic concentrations can influence campaign strategies and the focus of advocacy groups. Moreover, businesses can better serve this growing market by recognizing cultural preferences in product development and marketing.

As the U.S. becomes more diverse, the visibility of Muslim communities will continue to expand. Policymakers, educators, and community organizers must rely on reliable demographic data to foster inclusion, address disparities, and build resilient, multicultural societies.
