Google Maps Adds Time Zone Feature for Asian Users

Google Maps has launched a new time‑zone overlay that lets travelers, business travelers, and residents across Asia view local times directly on the map. The update, first rolled out in Japan and Singapore, now supports all major Asian regions, including China, India, and Southeast Asian countries. The feature appears as a subtle overlay on the map, providing real‑time UTC offsets and local time conversions for any point of interest.

What Changed?

The update adds a new icon to the Google Maps interface that, when tapped, displays the current time and UTC offset for the selected location. In addition, the map’s search results now include a time stamp, making it easier to coordinate meetings and flights without switching to a separate app. This comes in response to the growing demand for integrated time‑zone tools as Asia’s business hours span a wide range of offsets.

How It Works

When a user selects a location, the map queries Google’s time‑zone database and overlays a small bubble that displays the local time in 24‑hour format. The feature uses the same infrastructure that powers Google Calendar’s time‑zone calculations, ensuring consistency across platforms. Users can toggle the overlay off or adjust the displayed format in the settings menu.

Implications for Travelers

Asia’s dense travel network benefits from a unified time‑zone view. Tourists can now check the local time of a landmark while planning a route, reducing confusion around daylight saving changes that affect only a handful of Asian countries. Business travelers will appreciate the ability to schedule conference calls across Tokyo, New Delhi, and Jakarta without juggling multiple time‑zone calculators.

User Experience

Early feedback indicates that the overlay is intuitive and does not clutter the map. Users can hide the time‑zone bubble with a single tap, ensuring that the map remains a clean navigation tool. Accessibility options allow the time bubble to be read by screen readers, making the feature inclusive for users with visual impairments.

Future Updates

Google plans to extend the time‑zone overlay to include sunrise and sunset times, which would be especially useful for photographers and outdoor enthusiasts. The company has also hinted at integrating weather data with time zones, creating a comprehensive planning tool for the region. As Asia continues to grow as a global economic hub, these enhancements position Google Maps as a critical resource for time‑conscious users.
